Advanced Equity Modeling (Workshop D/E)

This applied workshop introduces students to the more complex issues associated with building equity valuation models in Excel. This workshop covers how to undertake sensitivity analysis in Excel, how to quickly identify modeling errors using Excel audit tools, and how to model debt and equity while avoiding circular references. Please note that students will need to bring laptops for this session as they will be building their own valuation models in Excel.

Resume and Interview Prep/ How to secure an internship (Workshop A/B/C/D/E)

The resume, cover letter, and interview workshop is intended for students who are planning to pursue a career in the capital markets. This workshop has been developed by the BCC in conjunction with industry professionals (who are UBC alumni) and graduates from the Investment Banking mentorship program. In the beginning, there will be an overview of what is needed in a Capital Markets resume and cover letter - briefed by an industry professional. Then, some students may have an opportunity to review their resume and cover letter in front of the class by their respective workshop co-ordinators. The true benefit of the workshop will be derived from the interview preparation portion of the workshop. As Investment Banking interviews are considered to be the most challenging for fresh graduates, you will learn the skills and techniques of successful interviewers by reviewing real-life interviews. Lastly, you will access to investment Banking interview questions compiled by recruiters and previous students and have the opportunity to have a frank discussion with professionals who have been recruiters.

The Art of the Deal – IPO (Workshop A/B/C)

This workshop will introduce students to the process of listing a private company on the stock market. It is designed as a practitioners guide to the IPO process and will cover the preparation, execution, and marketing components of taking a company public. Discussion will revolve around using a real-world example to understand the logistical steps taken to execute an IPO from an investment banking perspective. The session will be interactive, and questions will be welcomed.

Speakers' Biography

Edward J. (Ted) McGurk, Vice President and Director of TD Securities

Ted joined TD Securities’ Vancouver office in February 2007. He was previously a Director with RBC Capital Markets. Ted has over 13 years experience successfully executing IPOs and numerous debt and equity financings and merger & acquisition advisory assignments for BC-based companies in a range of industries. Representative clients include Fortress Paper, Ballard Power, Xantrex Technologies, MacDonald Dettwiler, Columbia Power Corp., Edmonton Airport Authority, University of British Columbia and Finning. Ted has an MBA from the University of British Columbia and a B.Sc (Biochemistry) from the University of Ottawa.

Craig Werstiuk

Craig Werstiuk is a Managing Director in the Global Investment Banking group at RBC Capital Markets where has spent 12 years working in the firm's Vancouver, Toronto and London offices. He has been active in a wide variety of merger and acquisition sell and buy-side advisory and valuation assignments as well as equity and debt offerings in Canadian, US and UK capital markets. Craig's career has largely been involved in assisting natural resources clients, with a focus over the last seven years on the mining sector.

Craig completed a Masters in Finance degree at London Business School, in addition to a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia. Craig also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Valuation Approaches (Workshop D/E)

This workshop will introduce students to the common valuation methodologies utilized by investment banks. Using practical examples, the workshop will examine in detail the concepts of comparable company analysis, precedent transaction analysis, and discounted cash flow modeling, along with the benefits - and pitfalls - of each approach. Other alternative valuation approaches will also be identified. The session will be interactive, and questions will be welcomed.

Speakers' Biography

Michael Scott

Michael Scott is an analyst in the Global Investment Banking group at RBC Capital Markets. Since joining RBC in 2007, Michael has been responsible for financial modeling and analysis on a number of corporate finance and M&A transactions across a broad range of industries. Prior to joining RBC, Michael worked in infrastructure finance, focusing on public infrastructure projects and P3s.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from the University of British Columbia and received a diploma in Organisational and Strategic Management from the London School of Economics.
